“The ultimate in crowd-sourced, user-generated, globalized wiki-culture, San Francisco-based designer Brian Singer's 1000 Journals Project is as analog as can be. In the decade since Singer distributed the project's first notebooks — featuring original covers by popular young artists and an open invitation to fill some of their pages and pass them on — the journals have crisscrossed the globe. Along the way, they've accumulated powerful, eclectic stories and art, and spawned exhibitions, a book, a documentary film, and a second round of international paper-tag.”

Launched ten years ago, the 1000 Journals Project sent blank journals with cover designs by a variety of artists into the world for individuals to add writing, art, and poetry to each journal and pass it along. The journals have since traveled throughout the United States and forty other countries. Fifteen of the original journals will be on view at the Skirball, with computer kiosks linking to online versions of many others. The exhibition will also expand the next generation of the project, called 1001 Journals. A new set of journals with cover designs by ten Los Angeles-based artists will be circulated to community partners across the city and returned to the Skirball for gallery display. Every visitor will then have the opportunity to contribute to a journal.
