If you want to know what Bembe is, you're going to have to be more specific. Is it a traditional form of Afro-Cuban drumming associated with rituals of folk religion, a progressive dance-music spot in Williamsburg predating the hipster invasion, a series of monthly parties both at said bar and in other cities, or a loose collective of globe-trotting DJs known as masters of fusing Latin, tropical, Afro-beat, rare funk, and live percussion? All of the above, naturally — and its return to LA is also the love-fest of the season. With extended family like founding member Carlos Mena (Casamena / Yoruba / Ocha), Chico Mann (Antibalas), Wiseacre (Funky in the Middle), Jeremy Sole (KCRW / Afro Funke'), Claudio Maike (Yoruba), and Amon (Afrokinetic) on the drums, two may be company, but 6:4 is a crowd-pleaser.
