La Luz de Jesus says…

Multimedia artist, photographer, and journalist Ruby Ray may not be a household name, but with a body of work like hers, she ought to be. In the late '70s, she managed the SF outpost of London-based Rough Trade Records while documenting the city's burgeoning punk scene, eventually helping V. Vale establish the legendary alt-culture publication, RE/Search. Ray relocated to NYC's East Village in the early '80s, where she exhibited photographs and experimented with live projections; but it's her West Coast oeuvre that's the focus at La Luz de Jesus. First Wave Punk Photography chronicles the seminal years of punk rock in California (1977-1981), and is inspired by Ray's current project, a compilation of 250 images that serve as a visual account of her dazzling career.
