Imagine a world decades into the future. What advanced technologies will remain in the wake of our economic collapse? What cultural seismic shifts will result from the world's environmental devastation? The answer could only be -- widespread rollerblading. Fuck the bicycle, and its 200-year evolution as the most efficient form of manpowered transportation! Clearly the rollerblade is the only solution to a world without gasoline! And thank Christ someone in the film community had the vision to see that rollerblading was more than a temporary fad for hormonally-charged teen punks, and that it was destined to stay cool forever, that it would never devolve to the point where its only remaining popular use is a day-rate rental for a Myspace hookup with a Venice Beach bunny. To celebrate the enduring spirit of the time-honored "futureskate" subgenre, here's a double feature that's more Xtreeeeeeeme than Sonic The Hedgehog® ultimate-fighting Cheetos' Chester Cheetah® in a cage suspended over a raging river of Mountain Dew®. First up, Prayer of the Rollerboys, which stars Corey Haim and his spiky moussed hair battling a fascist legion of White Power crack-dealing 'bladers wearing uniform khaki dusters. Then, Solarbabies, the even more preposterous post-apocalyptic tale of an orphan gang tapped to save the planet with the help of rad field hockey skills, a plucky attitude and a E.T.-like glowing orb. Prayer of the Rollerboys director Rick King will appear in-person for a Q&A before intermission.
Prayer of the Rollerboys  Dir. Rick King, 1991, 35mm, 95 min.
Solarbabies   Dir. Alan Johnson, 1986, 35mm, 94 min.
