Yoshitaka Amano is something of a living legend in his native Japan, being one of the most influential and prolific artists, illustrators, authors, and game designers (most notably Final Fantasy) in its history. He admits to being enamored of American comics and animation as a kid, and his most famous fan, Takashi Murakami, ten years Amano's junior, is a mega-star in the US. Yet this grandfather of superflat has never really had a proper solo show in America — until now. LeBasse Projects presents a remarkable series of new paintings that combine the crisp flourishes and impossible coyness of his line drawings (mostly of young, beautiful heroines) with an almost supernaturally saturated, vibrant palette — rendered in high-gloss car paint and metallic glitter as an homage to the idealized US of his childhood memory.
