Hammer Lecture: Art and Public Space in Los Angeles

New Yorker art critic Peter Schjeldahl once noted that in NYC, "The moment you step outside your own door, you are in the public sphere." Conversely, much is made of the isolating effect car culture has on individuals vis à vis their fellow citizens, and the atrophying of active public spaces in a car-oriented city. Yet LA has one of the most vigorously innovative architecture cultures in the world, as well as one of the most long and storied traditions of mural-making and arts-based activism in the nation. Join a discussion with Edgar Arceneaux (Watts House Project), Judy Baca (SPARC), Sandra de la Loza (Arts and Action), and Christine Y. Kim (LACMA and LAND), as they try to get it all sorted out for the record.
