In New York, street art is tagged on the sides of buildings and pasted on empty storefronts. In Los Angeles, a city of automatic transmissions and three-hour traffic, public art may best be presented, well, on a billboard. The MAK Center for Art & Architecture is doing just that: it has selected 21 contemporary artists to make their marks on decommissioned billboards all over West Hollywood, from Sunset Boulevard to the Santa Monica Freeway. How Many Billboards? — up through the early part of April — is intended as a reflective tool in the middle of quotidian life; as the director for the project notes, "Channels are opened for experimentation, innovation, and cultural exchange."

MAK Center for Art and Architecture says…

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House is pleased to present its most ambitious project to date: How Many Billboards? Art in Stead. This large-scale urban exhibition debuts 21 newly commissioned works by leading contemporary artists, presented simultaneously on billboards in Los Angeles in February and March 2010. In complement to the exhibition, a panel on March 24 at the Central Library's Mark Taper Auditorium, composed of outdoor media professionals and legal experts, will focus on the city's recent debate surrounding LED billboards and illegal signage, and examine free speech rights as they relate to images on the streets. Participating Panelists: Toby Miller, Professor of Media & Cultural Studies, UC-Riverside, Rick Robinson, West Coast General Manager, MacDonald Media, Christine Pelisek, Journalist, LA Weekly, John Tehranian, Attorney and Partner, One LLP and Professor, Chapman University.
