The monthly Flypoet Spoken Word and Music Showcase exposes underground spoken-word artists to mainstream audiences, giving both crowds and poets alike an opportunity to witness stimulating live performance. Founded in 2000 by spoken-word artist John Hensley, the institution has since evolved from a tiny open-mike night into a juggernaut celebrated by everyone from beatniks to industry execs. Tonight, the incandescent spoken-word phenom Sekou (tha misfit) returns from a smash appearance at NYC's Under the Radar Festival; he's joined by live-action painter and anti-war activist Norton Wisdom, and dreamy local strummer Chris Pierce with intensely soulful musical interludes.
