Master puppeteer Basil Twist follows up on his recent success of Arias With a Twist, staging his own quirky version of the Stravinsky ballet, Petrushka. Instead of dancers pretending to be puppets, however, Twist stays true to his name, offering puppets who are dancers. With live music by identical twin Russian pianists, the production draws on the eastern tradition of Bunraku, where three puppeteers manipulate a single, oversized puppet. Twist's surreal swirl of disembodied instruments, cartoon-like hypno-art, and endearing characters creatively bring the ballet full circle, evidence that puppetry really is, as Twist calls it, the original multimedia art form.
