Beetle Queen
Thursday Mar 11, 2010 (8–10pm)
$10
A spellbinding documetary, Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo by Director Jessica Oreck, (2009, 90 min) explores the mystery of the development of Japan’s love affair with bugs. Oreck traces the various religious and philosophical influences, namely Buddhism and Shintoism, with its emphasis on the primacy of nature. The documetary spends plenty of time exploring shops where bugs are sold as pets and children who like to play with them. Using insects like an anthropologist’s toolkit, the film uncovers Japanese philosophies that will shift Westerners’ perspectives on nature, beauty, life, and even the seemingly mundane realities of their day-to-day routines. Director Jessica Oreck will appear in person for a Q&A after the screening.
