In this dual-venue mini-retrospective of works mainly from the mid-'70s and early '80s, SolwayJones and Kunsthalle L.A. set up an intriguing and enlightening contrast between two influential series of works on paper by Channa Horwitz. Both series are executed on graph paper, and each addresses larger issues of structure and gesture in modern art. The intimate, painterly, and breezy color works at SolwayJones form an engaging counterpart to the large-scale, black-and-white, monumental works around the corner at Kunsthalle L.A. Taken together, the exhibitions reveal mathematics to be a pliable medium, musical in its variability, without being infinitely so. Not unlike a chess player, Horwitz operates expressively and with a spirit of adventure within a rigid structure of form and theory.
