Mark Growden's ninth album was written and recorded in his long-time Bay Area haunts in Oakland; but he's been calling Los Angeles home in the lead-up to the official release of Saint Judas (also available as a double LP). A gritty treasure of urban romanticism, this soulful, surprising record — despite Growden's impressive supporting ensemble and self-accompaniment on the accordion, baritone sax, banjo, and handlebars — is essentially a voice-driven document. At the heart of the standards, rare covers, and original compositions are Growden's tightly-controlled, richly inflected, and subtly expressive vocals — which, as great as the record is, still beg to be heard in person.
