Although he was born in New York and lives and works in Berlin, there is something about David Levine's long-term found-photo diary, Hopeful, that belongs here in LA. This collection of discarded "head shots" amassed by the artist over the years portrays the ultimate narrative of shattered dreams, exposing an immortally heartbreaking moment of optimism as a dream teeters on the brink of total failure. Chinatown's François Ghebaly Gallery brings the series here this month, providing it with a whole new context, and bittersweet, deeper shades of meaning. (SND)
