“The Academy's free screenings of Oscar-nominated and winning documentary films are always informative and compelling. May 19 is Viva la Causa, capturing Cesar Chavez and a group of farm workers taking on the corporate farming powers and I.O.U.S.A., examining America's national debt and its ramifications. May 26, The Conscience of Nhem En recounts the experience of a soldier who took identification photos of people before they were killed by the Khmer Rouge, and Standard Operating Procedure reveals the inner workings of the Abu Ghraib prison as well as the Iraq War. June 9 is Tongzhi in Love, uncovering the lives of gay men in China, and The Betrayal (Nerakhoon) is an account — 23 years in the making — of a Laotian family trying to emigrate to the United States.”
The Academy kicks off Part Two of the 28th annual Contemporary Documentaries series, which showcases 2008 feature-length and short documentaries. Full series schedule.
