While 826LA is dedicated to developing the writing skills of kids under 18, the nonprofit org opens its doors to readers of all ages, inviting Angelenos to take part in the return of its regular book club series. This month's selection is Consider the Lobster (2005) by David Foster Wallace, author and creative writing professor whose suicide in 2008 stunned friends, students, fans, and the literary community alike. A thought-provoking collection of non-fiction pieces, the book covers topics ranging from politics and porn to lobster rights, with the eponymous essay questioning the practice of dropping live crustaceans into boiling water. The late writer's novels, short stories, and fiction established him as one of this generation's most brilliant minds, and in Consider the Lobster, DFW tailors his clever brand of metafiction for a singular take on real-life events.
