Embracer of all things kitsch, pop-culture tour guide Charles Phoenix returns with an all-new tour/field trip. This time, the city of Downey is the star — notable, Phoenix declares, for several reasons: its iconic representation of mid-century architecture in its Googie buildings; dingbat apartments and ranch homes; for being the home of both the Carpenters and the world's oldest McDonald's, and for housing the remains of the 1888 Los Angeles County "Poor Farm." Many other local sites will be visited, enhanced by Phoenix's unique eye for American culture.
