This time, the city of Downey is the star — notable, Phoenix declares, for several reasons: its iconic representation of mid-century architecture in its Googie buildings; dingbat apartments and ranch homes; for being the home of both the Carpenters and the world's oldest McDonald's, and for housing the remains of the 1888 Los Angeles County "Poor Farm."
