“At a time when the country of Chile is foremost in the world's thoughts for tragic reasons, Mary Heebner's long-planned exhibition of sultry, evocative, quasi-abstract mixed-media works on paper — sponsored by the Consulate General of Chile in Los Angeles — pays homage to that nation's greatest love poet, Pablo Neruda, and to a part of Chile's historical and cultural vibrancy. Heebner's images are in an important translation of Neruda's work, Intimacies (Harper Collins), and her tender deconstruction of his words gives shape to passages like these: "Oh flesh, my own flesh, woman whom I loved and lost, I summon you in the moist hour, I raise my song to you. Like a jar you housed infinite tenderness. And the infinite oblivion shattered you like a jar."”
