The terminus of Manifest Destiny has produced an unparalleled convergence of cultures, and by using methodologies such as cultural, social, and environmental history, Home Lands: How Women Made the West explores the influence of women in all facets of Western life. The exhibit focuses on three different regions in the western US: Puget Sound, Northern New Mexico's Rio Arriba, and the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, where an 1892 quilt, a flapper-era "Harvery Girl" uniform, and an early washing machine illustrate how women have continuously influenced the development of Western American culture, even when they couldn't vote.

The Autry National Center of the American West says…

The Autry says: From ancient pueblos to modern suburbs, women have shaped the Western landscape through choices about how to sustain home, family, and community. Home Lands: How Women Made the West brings together women's history, Western history, and environmental history to show how women have been at the heart of the Western enterprise across cultures and over time. Historical artifacts, art, photographs, and biographies of individual women will lead visitors through three distinctive Western environments created and inhabited by women.
