Acclaimed, award-winning performance artist John Kelly has a voice that's eerie in its elasticity, able to bend between genders and spirits alike. In his much-lauded show Paved Paradise, Kelly pulls off a most uncanny feat: he channels Joni Mitchell — her music, her words from interviews — until he both becomes her, and something new. It's a transference full of spectacle and meaning, but above all, Kelly's voice proves supernatural; like, say, Antony, Björk, or Joanna Newsom, he has a voice that proudly proclaims its outsider status without compromising its virtuosity.

The Renberg Theatre says…

The Gay & Lesbian Center says:

John Kelly is an Obie Award-winning actor, dancer and performance artist. He is also Joni Mitchell. Ok, not exactly, but so close that Joni herself is a fan! Kelly's theatrical homage to the music legend has thrilled audiences and critics across the nation, and now he brings Paved Paradise to the Renberg! The concept is simple: Joni Mitchell in concert, with Kelly on vocals, guitar and dulcimer, backed by piano and bass. Featuring songs from every stage of Joni's career, the "book" consists entirely of her own words. The original arrangements are intact, and Kelly's original-key recreation of her vocals is uncanny.
