Composed almost all on the road, Bernstein's Symphony No. 2 (subtitled after W.H. Auden's poem) is a symphony for piano and orchestra in two parts, each consisting of three sections; the second and third sections of part one each contain seven variations. Despite the piano's prominent role, Bernstein insisted this was "no concerto, in the virtuosic sense."
