“Photographer and UCLA faculty member Catherine Opie displays her new series of time-sensitive images taken from the deck of a container boat voyaging from Korea to Long Beach. Continuing her unique abstraction of landscape elements, Opie photographs the positioning of the sun as it rises and sets on the horizon, with an overview reminiscent of her Icehouses and Surfers series. At the gallery's nearby second location, sculptor Liz Larner freshens up ripe old icons like hearts and flowers, using an array of carefully selected, unlikely materials, colors, and shapes, the better to decipher the emotionally fraught double meanings we might otherwise take for granted.”
