When Orly Cogan's work first gained international attention, it wasn't only for pressing the traditionally crafts-associated medium of embroidery into the service of fine art — it was for using it to depict sexually explicit activities involving precocious tween girls, while staying true to the inherent cuteness of flowers and lace. In her most recent work, those little girls are all grown up, and while their sexual appetites may have matured, they haven't abated. Her elaborately, warmly stitched vignettes now feature full-figured ladies kissing frogs (and the occasional man) or vacuuming the living room, throwing a nudist block party, and other suburban Penthouse Forum-type confections. What this inventive artist may have left behind in shock value, she more than makes up for in exuberant complexity, wit, and craftsmanship.

Charlie James Gallery says…

Charlie James Gallery says: We are proud to present New York artist Orly Cogan in her first LA solo show, Love Street. Orly works with vintage, printed fabrics and updates them with personal, feminine imagery using embroidery and other sewing techniques. Her appropriation of vintage fabric items puts her in collaboration with her forebears, and her interventions result in unique, contemporary objects in which she is often the subject depicted. The personal tableaux that play across these quilts, table runners, and doilies illustrate different elements of contemporary identity. They ask questions about relationships, sources of emotional sustenance, and feminine archetypes. The juxtaposition of vintage feminine and contemporary feminist is a rich contrast that gives the work much of its energy.
