The Chola bronze icons of Tamil Nadu, created during the 10th to 13th centuries, represent one of the world’s great statuary traditions. The imagery of Nataraja in which Shiva performs the cosmic dance of destruction has drawn diverse responses, from celebrated scientists such as Carl Sagan to renowned artists such as Auguste Rodin. Dr. Sharada Srinivasan’s studies of bronze casting traditions trace this imagery to the 8th- and 9th- century Pallava period. An archaeometallurgist, art historian and exponent of the classical south Indian temple dance tradition of Bharata Natyam, Dr. Srinivasan presents a scholarly illustrated lecture and dance performance that richly elucidates these ideas.
