You had to respect his restlessness, but when the great hip-hop collagist RJD2 made a bid for pop songwriting with 2007's The Third Hand, the result was a bewildering farrago of inherited indie signifiers and chunky beats. Luckily, Ramble John seems happy to let that part of his past remain a foreign country: The Colossus — his first self-produced, self-released album — in large part hearkens back to his Deadringer days, with sampledelic instrumentals and effortlessly woven vocal spots, while still looking forward with more organic instrumentation and a diminished reliance on Def Jux-approved rap spots. Where RJ once seemed intent on negating his early triumphs, these days he's genuinely expanding upon them.

2009 saw the launch of his label RJ'S Electrical Connections, and announcement of the forthcoming album The Colossus.

In the meantime, RJD2 has done an awesome remix of Balkan Beat Box's song "War Again." To download for free, click here.
