Skirball Cultural Center says…

Experience George Segal's life-sized sculptural work The Expulsion, the generous gift of the George and Helen Segal Foundation, showcased in its inaugural presentation as a Skirball acquisition. One of America's great contemporary sculptors and an acute observer of the human condition, Segal (1924–2000) explored only five biblical themes during his prolific fifty-year career. For his depiction of Adam and Eve expelled from the Garden of Eden, Segal created an environment that is both profoundly personal and deeply universal.
Featured alongside The Expulsion are revealing photographs by Donald Lokuta, who beginning in 1984 recorded Segal's creative process. Lokuta worked closely with Segal in the studio, even serving as a model from time to time. As Lokuta has written, "The photographs are a record of a personal journey, an adventure in art and creativity—a document of a life and a friendship."
