Rebellious Los Angeles teenager Bethany, misunderstood by her parents and frustrated with the superficiality of life in Los Angeles, goes to Israel for the summer on a school trip and vanishes, causing her panicked parents to travel to the Holy Land in search of their daughter. In a forceful monologue during the first act, the audience sees Bethany's transformation from a furious, nihilistic teen to one who finds a new identity in the modesty, spirituality, and family-mindedness of the ultra-Orthodox Haredi community. As her parents explore the mystery of their daughter's disappearance, a conflicting and complicated social and religious culture is revealed.
