Los Angeles artist Pierre Picot has called half of his current exhibition at Chinatown's Jancar Gallery Collaborations with... in part because one of the two series presented are in fact semi-blind tandem pieces in which he invited his colleagues to augment works he had mailed to them; an intriguing project yielding eclectic, witty results. But as for the large-scale works in the main gallery, Picot uses so many "hands" in his solo work that these dazzling, dizzying black-and-white (except one) landscapes could easily be thought collaborative themselves. Combining the obsessive, dark cross-hatching of Edvard Munch or Andrew Schoultz with the fuzzy, cottony pastoralism of early Kandinsky; the angular abstraction of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari; and the fluid surrealism of Escher, Picot's forced and fantastical perspectives and accordion-fold economies of scale support epic, sweeping vistas, that are chaotic yet balanced, and retain the intimacy of drawings in the archipelagos of pattern and mark-making.
