Venice Beach is legendary for being home to generations of the most important and/or intriguing artists LA has ever produced, among them, the photographer Alan Shaffer. Through decades of camaraderie that in many cases began as far back as shared Art Center days, Shaffer has trained his professional lens not only on editorial and private clientele, but on this evolving community of Venice artists. From Robbie Conal to Doug Edge, Ed Moses, and dozens more, Shaffer's portraits capture these looming eccentrics in their natural habitat and with their inherent wit. A special installation of photographs and original works by several of the artists depicted was instigated at Abbot Kinney staple Capri Restaurant in time for the Venice Art Walk in May — but remains on view through at least July 3rd.

Note:

Alan Shaffer gives an exhibition walk-through at a brunch reception on Sunday, July 18 (1-4pm).

Capri says:

Alan Shaffer has been involved with Venice Art Walk & Auctions for more than 20 years. He's had his hand in nearly every aspect of the event, often providing photographs of auction items or the event itself. This year Shaffer takes on a new role as an artist on display. His photographs of longtime Venice artists (the neighborhood's own rat-pack) are accompanied by pieces from the five featured artists themselves.
