Not only has John Lurie starred in a string of Jim Jarmusch films in the '80s, he's written and directed the cult-hit TV series Fishing With John, as well as composed dozens of albums and film scores. Yet while the modern-day Renaissance man has conquered the worlds of film, TV, and music, he's also been exploring the power of painting as a means of creative expression. Reminiscent of outsider art, Lurie's works might at first suggest a naive sensibility, yet they reflect a sophisticated lyricism through evocative titles like The Spirits Are Trying To Tell Me Something But It's Really Fucking Vague. The result is a curious type of hybrid art that is simultaneously primordial and cinematic, yielding a visual representation of an extraordinary person's psyche as filtered through powerful, mysterious internal forces.

Gallery Brown says:

Stylistically primitive, yet completely modern, Lurie's work presents his musings in a new, interpretive storytelling manner – managing to be haunting, poignant as well as humorous.
