Ruth Bachofner Gallery says:
Monika's Rittershaus' photographs of LA Opera's first presentation of Richard Wagner's epic masterwork Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring). The story, told through a cycle of four operas, revolves around a tragic power struggle between gods, goddesses, humans, giants, and dwarves. The opera's groundbreaking production addresses The Ring's universal themes through the unconventional, contemporary vision and direction of Achim Freyer. Monika Rittershaus is one of today's most prominent theater photographers. She has been commissioned by opera houses, theaters and music festivals internationally, and is the exclusive photographer for LA Opera's Ring Cycle. Rittershaus approaches her subject with gentle precision and respect, searching for the essence of the production and translates it into her own visual expression. She has been documenting the work of Achim Freyer since 1989.
Monika Rittershaus's photographs reveal images of stillness, depicting instances of a movement as great moments. This stillness makes the singing audible; those moments make the breath of the theater palpable. That is the distinctive quality that constitutes her visual art. -Achim Freyer
