Whether as Chief Inspector Clouseau in Pink Panther (1963) or as a nightmare guest in The Party (1968), actor Peter Sellers always had a talent for making otherwise unbelievable characters come to life — and the mild-mannered Jewish lawyer Harold Fine is no exception. In the trippy 1968 comedy, I Love You Alice B. Toklas!, Sellers is a conservative would-be groom who discovers he's actually a free-spirited hippie — that is, after tasting brownies inspired by Alice B. Toklas' own special recipe (guess what's in them). The result is an amusingly kaleidoscopic journey into the heart of '60s counter-culture California, where everybody loves Alice B. Toklas, including Harold Fine.

Skirball Cultural Center says…

The brilliant comic Peter Sellers stars in this slapstick send-up of America on the verge of the countercultural revolution. Paul Mazursky co-wrote the script about a middle-aged mama’s boy who decides to tune in, turn on, and drop out. Directed by Hy Averback. (1968, 92 min. Rated R.)
