Doni Silver Simons, a painter and installation artist whose work centers around the performative and symbolically narrative activities of counting, mark-making/marking time, and meditating on the measurable aspects of existence, composes a new cross-genre work that trains her hard-won patience and expressive deliberation on the long, hot, traditionally sun-baked and slothful month of August. Her gallery installation evolves over time at the heavy hands of passing dog-days, as the secular devotions of her daily morning activities modify her earth-and-bone, abstract paintings and mixed media works in a paradox of tactility, dissolution, accrual, ephemerality, ritual, and deeply symbolic spiritual narrative.

Note:

The ongoing performance takes place weekdays from 8-10am, August 12-31. The gallery is open to the public during the early morning hours of the performance. There is a conversation with the artist on August 18, 7-9pm.

Sherry Frumkin Gallery says:

Sherry Frumkin Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings and a performance by Doni Silver Simons. The paintings are ragged, primal, yet elegant moments of exploration; the performance, August: A Study, marks the artist's return to solo performance work.

In the new paintings, Silver Simons poses questions and confronts preconceptions regarding the dissolution of time and materials. The characteristic markings of her work remain evident, but concepts of unraveling are the primary focus of the artist's consideration. While torn and raw in appearance, the work retains Silver Simons' conceptual refinement.
