On face, it seems almost perverse to film a band as vibrant and epic as Mogwai in stately black and white and frame them almost exclusively in tight shots and extreme close ups. That less obvious choice was the right one, it turns out, as directors Vincent Moon and Nathanael Le Scouarnac complement their subjects' sweeping post-rock with well-paced, detail-focused restraint. The between-songs street-scene cutaways feel superfluous (the fans' beatific smiles say so much more), but everything else, from the set list (Young Team and The Hawk Is Howling represent strongly) to the crisp cinematography, soars. As with all things Mogwai, Burning is no alone-with-earbuds affair. Catch the screening for the full effect.

The Echo & Echoplex says…

The film was directed by Vincent Moon and Nathanael Le Scouarnac (of La Blogotheque's Take-Away Shows fame). These creative powerhouses in film and music have come together with Mogwai to produce something undeniably unique and mesmerizing, grabbing the audience from the first opening seconds and never letting go. A Mogwai gig is an experience of the senses, and Burning comes as close to the real thing as one could ever hope.
