LA-based photographer Heather Cantrell's elaborate tableaux serve as backdrops in her unique and unconventional brand of portraiture. With carefully constructed scenery, she references natural-history displays as well as classical vignettes in order to further refine her distinctive, hybrid form of photography. In her new show at Kinkead Contemporary, Cantrell once again transforms the gallery into a temporary portrait studio, where she continues to subvert conventions by incorporating mirrors — and herself — into the picture.

Note:

Portrait sessions are open to the public; for $100, the sitter takes home a one-of-a-kind 4x5-inch Polaroid that is also an original work of art. Contact the gallery for details.
