For the past 25 years, art collector Billy Shire and his art gallery, La Luz de Jesus, have showcased the best in lowbrow and pop surrealist art. To celebrate this landmark anniversary, Shire's Los Feliz gallery presents their biggest group show yet: a retrospective of 260 artists they’ve exhibited over the years. To accommodate this vast body of work, the show is a two-parter, with the second pair of opening nights on November  4 and 5. The press opening for part 1 revealed a remarkable roster of works by art-world luminaries such as Jennybird Alcantara, Owen Smith, and Frank Kozik. The subject of Alcantara's ravishing painting, Glass House Girls Make Good Warriors, is a saintly heroine whose glass chest reveals her duality via both the breathtaking glimpses of nature revealed and a coiled, hissing snake.  Alcantara explains, "She is just as dangerous as she is innocent. I love girls from fairytale stories, but in my world, they don't leave their weapons at home when venturing into the deep, dark woods."

La Luz de Jesus says…

Billy Shire has masterminded La Luz de Jesus 25, a monumental group show featuring more than 260 artists, each of whom have created a piece of art and written an essay about their experience with the gallery. In 25 years of groundbreaking exhibitions, this is La Luz's first retrospective survey, featuring three generations of the most important artists working today. Never before have all these artists shown together in one exhibition. The book, a companion to the show, chronicles the rich legacy of La Luz de Jesus and the thriving art movements it helped launch.
