Meiji: Japan Rediscovered explores the connection of Japan and the West in the mid to late 19th century through the early 20th century. The Meiji period (1868-1912) is perhaps the most dynamic era in Japanese cultural history, as Japanese artists rediscovered their own history, in conjunction with "opening" the country to Europe and America. The World's Fairs became a main venue where Japan presented itself to Europe and America with a broad range of products reflecting traditional values and a variety of clashing new ideas introduced by the West. Looking at this rich production of art for export, Meiji features little seen objects from the museum's collection which illustrate new developments in painting, metalwork, sculpture, textiles and ceramics from the era.
