Adopted by a pastor and his wife, Smith grew up on Long Island, where she developed her fondness for music and unrequited love. In 2003, Smith gained popularity with “her bright soprano, balanced by serious lyrical darkness” (Rolling Stone). Her affinity for folk, country, Americana, bluegrass, pop, alternative, and rock are presented within her tunes. People Magazine says, “this singer-songwriter continues to fly a bit under the radar, but these smartly written folk tunes deserve your attention.”
