Following a short hiatus spent producing Roky Erickson's record and collaborating with folks like Nora Jones and the New Pornographers, Will Shef has re-assembled Okkervil River's ragtag crew to tour in support of their latest release via Jagjaguwar, I am Very Far. Shef tightened the reigns for the indie-folk rock group's fifth full-length album and steered it into a dark, dense, and more mysterious place. Still a master lyricist, Shef throws equal concentration behind the orchestration, creating lush, thick soundscapes. Okkervil live shows are usually furious and dynamic, with Shef blasting through the songs with serious passion and intensity. The high-powered wildly enthusiastic Titus Andronicus and "post-wave" Wham City affiliates Future Islands round out the bill, making it one of the best of the summer.

The Wiltern says…

Formed in 1998 in Austin, TX, Okkervil Riverfind the middle ground between indie rock and folk-rock, placing slightly more emphasis on the former. Vocalist Will Robison Sheff and drummer Seth Warren first rubbed shoulders as high-school students in Meriden, NH, a town they eventually left to attend different colleges. The two reconvened several years later in Austin, where they put together Okkervil River with the help of bassist Zachary Thomas The group recorded several EPs as a trio, including 2000's Stars Too Small to Use before crossing paths with multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Meiburg at a local bar. Meiburg soon joined the band, and Okkervil River  made their first big splash at the SXSW festival in March 2000.
