Early Baroque music contains some of the most gorgeously lyrical melodies ever composed as well as vital, invigorating rhythms. Be transported into a world of serene beauty from the very opening notes of the adagio from Alessandro Marcello’s Oboe Concerto in D Minor, transcribed for solo piano by Earl Wild, followed by the flowing scales, crisp ornaments and bracing excitement of four of Domenico Scarlatti’s charming sonatas. An early Italian-influenced sonata by Mozart is the centerpiece of the program, which concludes with a sumptuous nocturne by Ottorino Respighi and the intense Dante Sonata by Franz Liszt, a work that depicts the descent into the underworld with the use of the famous tritone interval and devilishly treacherous pianistic wizardry.
