In the late 1940s, as the upheavals of World War II transformed the fine arts of Europe and the United States, Southern California resisted change. Even as young artists, art schools and local museums began looking toward a fresh, if uncertain, future, an aging hierarchy clung tenaciously to its values. Cubism baffled them, modernism offended them and notions of abstract surrealism and expressive gesture enraged them. Despite the artists’ valiant battles, these concepts and forms gradually infiltrated Los Angeles painting studios and printshops. In this lecture, Acton tells the story of the lonely explorations of several creative adventurers and their gradual acceptance by the intricate establishment of an American capital of culture.
