Norton Simon Museum of Art says…

Hans Memling was unparalleled in late 15th-century Bruges as a portraitist. He was sought after by the elite of society for his remarkable ability to portray his subjects with uncanny verisimilitude coupled with a psychological reserve. Above all, his portraits reveal a sense of humanity that unites depictions of mere mortals and divine beings. In this lecture, Dr. Maryan Ainsworth, Curator of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, discusses this unity, as demonstrated in the pairing of The Frick Collection's Portrait of a Man with the Norton Simon Museum's Christ Giving His Blessing. Held in the theater. Stickers for ensured seating will be distributed starting at 3:00 p.m.
