Documentarian Frederick Wiseman wanted to make a documentary about a nightclub, but after a trip to the Moulin Rouge put him to sleep, he chose another legendary Paris nightspot, the famously chic and artistic strip club Crazy Horse. The result is a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a new dance revue. We see dancer auditions, rehearsals, the selecting of scanty costumes, and the frustration of the choreographer, Philippe Decouflé, who, in a particularly French vein of thought, wants the show to "impress the intellectuals." It’s fly-on-the-wall filmmaking that makes us privy to the painstaking detail and grueling labor involved in creating a show at the 60-year-old club.

Landmark Nuart Theatre says…

Celebrated documentary director Frederick Wiseman spent ten weeks with his camera exploring one of the most mythic places dedicated to women: the Crazy Horse. Over the years this legendary Parisian cabaret club, founded in 1951 by Alain Bernardin, has become the Parisian nightlife "must" for any visitors, ranking alongside the Eiffel Tower and The Louvre. Wiseman's impeccable eye allows us to enter into this intriguing international temple of the Parisian club world and to discover what makes the Crazy Horse tick: elegance, dedication to the ideal, and a grueling schedule (with two shows a night and three on Saturdays, seven days a week). The film follows the rehearsals and performances for a new show called Désir, staged by perfectionist Philippe Decouflé, a celebrated French choreographer, as well as the backstage preparations of the dancers (make-up and costume fittings) and also the various issues involved in the planning of the show and the administration of the club. The show Désir is an artistic, modern, humorous, and colorful spectacle that is the pinnacle of "nude chic." (USA/France, 2011)
