Spirited Away is Hayao Miyazaki's inimitable masterpiece. Traveling with her parents (soon to be transformed into pigs), premonitory and morose ten-year-old Chihiro chances upon an abandoned amusement park that fronts a sorceress-run holiday resort for Japanese spirits. After her parents' unfortunate transformations, Chihiro works at a spirit bathhouse and must confront scores of magical creatures in order to find a way to save her parents — and herself. In this beautifully ethereal universe, the Self is kaleidoscopically examined through splinters of Shinto, hints of Lewis Carroll, and Miyazaki's surrealist notion of spiritual pilgrimage.

New 35mm Print: Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi), 2001, Studio Ghibli, 125 min. Hayao Miyazaki’s Academy Award-winning masterpiece was the biggest box office hit of all time in Japan and a film that helped redefine the possibilities of animation. Wandering through an abandoned carnival site, a 10-year-old stumbles into a dream-like spirit world where she is put to work in a bathhouse for the gods. Combining Japanese mythology with Through the Looking Glass-type whimsy, Spirited Away cemented Miyazaki’s reputation as an icon of inspired animation and wondrous, lyrical storytelling. In Japanese with English subtitles. Recommended Ages: 8 to
