Hang on a minute — aren't holidays supposed to be relaxing? With so many appearances to make, so many last-minute gifts to locate, and so many envelopes to lick, the season can feel like a full-time job. So, halt the mad dash to the mall or post office and take in something completely different. Images from Matthew Barney's latest mysterious performance piece should do the trick, or perhaps the riotous grrrrl rock of the Shondes at Echo Curio. More adventurous music lovers might even consider hitting Crash Mansion to find out just exactly what a Sweater Party is. Whether the jingle bells have you stoked or stressed, 'tis still the season, so spread it.

Tonight, the Sunset Strip's dimly lit Viper Room showcases some of the slickest rock this town has to offer, as loud-and-lovely chorus kings Oliver Future continue their weekly December residency in grand style. The Wildbirds co-grace the small but well-appointed stage with throwback licks and fuzzy pop hooks. The Wisconsin natives have been touring across the US and Canada as of late, and are no doubt overjoyed to hit LA's sunny streets; give them the hearty, ponytail-whipping West Coast welcome they deserve, and arrive early. - Jorge Barriere

Sweet, steel-spined folk-pop singer Jesca Hoop takes us inside her gypsy psyche, spinning tales of triumph and sorrow from her Tom Waits-endorsed debut, Kismet. A one-woman Tegan & Sara (seriously, when she doubles her vocals, she sounds strikingly similar), Hoop diverges from her indie-pop peers by venturing into cabaret, girly '80s pop, string-laden ballads, dub, and even a bit a of freaky folk. Show up early to catch the evening's supporting act, Lissie — a veteran of the lo-fi DIY circuit, she fits nicely on a bill of future female iconoclasts. - Jorge Barriere

Jokes about working with children and animals aside, LA-based photographer Jill Greenberg has built an internationally acclaimed fine-art career by doing just that. Alternately revered and reviled for previous works featuring classical portraits of monkeys and shrieking children, the artist here includes two series that take her themes to new areas. Ursine features large-scale portraits of live grizzly, black, and polar bears, sporting a variety of anthropomorphically menacing, comical, and quixotic expressions and postures. Performance, on the other hand, depicts Greenberg's daughter and another girl, both in the rosy, coltish flush of adolescence — hanging from gymnastic harnesses and rings in an examination of the awkward, organic onslaught of female beauty. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Note: A reception for the artist takes place on Thur Dec 13 (7-9pm).

Our friends at Filter magazine present a multifarious late-night shindig, bedecking the Hammer's usually serene courtyard with a slate of guest DJs. And, with extended hours, the gallery gives folks plenty of time to appreciate Terry Haggerty's gorgeous geometric wall paintings and Francis Alÿs' first large-scale US museum exhibition, Politics of Rehearsal. The latter includes provocative works such as When Faith Moves Mountains, a piece that tracks the move of a massive sand dune in Lima using only shovels and the craftiness of 500 friends. Capping the culture fest is a screening of Tim Burton's murderous Johnny Depp-driven musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. - Jason Jude Chan

This program of interdisciplinary movement-and-music pieces has a slight scent of inscrutable modern dance about it. Despite phrases like "the presence and absence of love" and "surreal private world" being bandied about, the solo and ensemble performers — as well as guest dancers and musicians like post-pop cabaret squeeze-box diva Mrs. Hobbs — are far more sultry and subversive than you might think. Working with intense physicality, dreamlike distortions of space and time, and collective metaphors for intimate psychological conditions, each of their "four cheeses" offers its own sweet and pungent pleasure. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Matthew Barney, iconic multimedia rainmaker and Björk's baby daddy, shows drawings relating to his newest multimedia work, Guardian of the Veil. The film documents a series of performances Barney gave in his Queens studio in April. Essentially, it deconstructs and engineers in recombinant form narrative and symbolic elements from his own maximalist, orgiastic Cremaster 3 and the late, great Norman Mailer's haunting novel Ancient Evenings — about a man whose story begins with his death. Photographs from Cremaster 3 are included to refresh your memory; the related drawings are pencil on black paper with petroleum, promising a surreal, uneasy aesthetic ambiguity, and a rich array of lusciously rendered compositions that don't make a bit of sense. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Note: An opening reception takes place on Sat Dec 15 (6-8pm), and Urs Fischer opens simultaneously at the nearby Regen Projects II (9016 Santa Monica Boulevard, at Almont Dr)

Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J) makes his only North American appearance this season, rocking a live audiovisual set with visual mastermind Scott Pagano at Interface 21 for the latest party installment from LA techno mafia Droid Behavior. Paap and Pagano's 5.1 DVD project UMFELD has earned heaps of critical acclaim, combining the former's intricate, spatial techno masterpieces with the latter's sophisticated visual sensibility. This all-night affair rocks it old-school style in a warehouse location announced the day of the event, featuring an epic sound system, multimedia installation art, and a powerful supporting cast — including techno stalwarts Jason Emsley, Andrew Kelley, Drumcell, and Acid Circus. - Steve Nalepa

Wayne "the Train" Hancock is the real deal — a true-blue, hillbilly swing messiah. The Austin son hits like an H-bomb, absolutely exploding the feet of anyone acquainted with the sorrow-sodden tunes of Hank Williams or the warm, sweeping orchestration of George Gershwin. Hancock's refusal to compromise his classic sound — a potent blend of western swing, blues, and honky-tonk — has earned him a fiercely loyal underground following, and his irrepressible energy has attracted attention from a panoply of A-list country stars. His live show, meanwhile, is guaranteed to exterminate your blues — or at least exile 'em. - JT Priest

The Coen brothers and pre-Spidey Sam Raimi are among American cinema's greatest genre ghosts, at ease in each of their eclectic endeavors. Tonight's two colossi of 1987 cult, Raising Arizona and Evil Dead II, provide playful evidence of their virtuosity. The Coens' riotous slapstick exercise revolves around ex-small-time-crook H.I. McDonnough (Nicholas Cage) and his ex-cop wife, following their adventures of aversion after kidnapping one of furniture king Nathan Arizona's quintuplets. With equal élan, Raimi's hysterically funny and inspired film functions as a revved-up remake and sequel of nonstop style. Stop-motion monstrosities and possessed anatomy populate the gory affair, as the heroic Ash attempts to survive the onslaught of the dead, again. - Jason Jude Chan

All new for 2007, Charles Phoenix's annual waltz down memory lane tilts helplessly into vaudeville, laughing merrily along the way. In addition to a vintage color slide show that sends up a range of major American holidays, this year's jubilee features marionettes, at least one ballerina, a yard-ornament light show, and a slew of timeless seasonal faves blasted through a Hammond organ. - JT Priest

In Of All the People in All the World: The Americas, UK theatre company Stan's Cafe collects 300 million grains of rice, creating a hauntingly beautiful, constantly shifting sculptural landscape. With one piece assigned to every person in the United States, the installation captures the sheer vastness of our population: individuality is lost as viewers contemplate their tiny place in the world by holding a single grain in their hands and walking among the ever-reorganized piles of grain. Actors dressed as lab technicians talk with guests about the awe-inspiring method by which the piece was created. - Allen Moon
