Next week, you're due for some serious quality time with family, friends, and — if you're lucky — some good books and back issues. But first, you've got to make it through this week's pre-holiday crunch. Clearly LA's creative community is already feeling the pressure: a surreal (and loud) costume-fetish rock show invades Safari Sam's, the Silent Movie Theatre screens un-PC seasonal classics for a blue Christmas, and the Funky in the Middle DJs can't remember which tree to trim at their Hanu-Kwanz-Mas throwdown. Don't stress — just keep wrapping those gifts, and spread it.

Reviving Peter Sellers' curious career before his death, Being There is director Hal Ashby's odd stab at political satire. The plot orbits around an innocent gardener named Chance — or, as Shirley MacLaine mishears, Chauncey Gardiner — who has gleaned most of his worldly knowledge through watching TV. After the death of his benefactor, Chance is thrown into a real-world whirlwind when Eve Rand (MacLaine) and her Washington-insider husband strike a benevolent bond with the well-dressed, articulate wanderer. People begin to interpret Chance's simple (gardening-inspired) observations as pearls of deep insight, and a case of political "Emperor's new clothes" ensues. Ashby's endearing film offers a time capsule of retro television spots and a transcendent message that life is a state of mind.

Tonight, the Silverlake Lounge plays host to a heavenly evening of singers and songwriters. Masters of the hushed vocal harmony, Alex & Sam enlist Rhodes keyboards, strings, and plenty of acoustic loveliness in their quest for seamless song-craft. Feel-good vibers Captain Automatic make an early appearance ahead of the ethereal chord spells of One Trick Pony. Closing out the evening are cheeky shoegazers Marvelous Toy, a local indie outfit who balance deep, heavy-down lyrics with a garagey folksiness that sways with warm and fuzzy optimism — a pitch-perfect note of frazzled, ironic cheer for the holidays.

Amon Amarth aren't too fond of their shirts, even in December. Being Vikings from Sweden, they're used to the cold and even thrive on it. Their synchronized hair twirling probably helps keep them warm, as well, and their epic hymns remind us that there was a reason that their people dominated Europe for the better part of three centuries. As popular as the band has become, it has yet to succumb to metalcore/emo wanking, staying true to its chunky, melodic death metal on its latest album, With Oden on Our Side. As Ralph Wiggum once put it, "Oh boy! Sleep! That's where I'm a Viking!" Amon Amarth are sure to make you wish you were a Viking all the time.

The Funky in the Middle folks go all-inclusive for their last party of 2007. The Hanu-Kwanz-Mas party honors not only an array of spiritual traditions, but a range of beatsmiths to match. Hustle and bump to underground dance impresario and host of KCRW's Nocturna, Raul Campos, and a bevy of breakers, glitch-lovers, and up-tempo crate-divers including Scott K, Jay Clue, Inka One, Dagaz, Argyle, and host/residents Caparro and Wiseacre. Dig deep in your pockets, as you're not just enjoying the eclectic menu and special house libations for yourself: proceeds from this soiree will be donated to the Venice Family Clinic.

Like Werner Herzog's slo-mo documentary on ski-flying The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner (1974), Steep conveys the breathless exhilaration of an extreme sport: big-mountain skiing. The high-definition film documents the rise of the nigh-suicidal experience across several lonesome, lovely peaks in Alaska, France, and Iceland. Director Mark Obenhaus focuses on the athletes' weightless existence and the risk management involved in pursuing an impossible moment.

To say that Regan Farquhar has hip-hop in his blood wouldn't be far off — his dad is, after all, the guy who wrote Krush Groove. But to call the man better-known as Busdriver a "rapper" is a gross understatement: Farquhar's flow leaves Twista in the dust and makes Saul Williams and Sage Francis look like coffee-shop amateurs. With a style as fast and incisive as it is off-kilter, Busdriver's lyrical content — critical takedowns of modern music delivered in ten-ton rhymes — will get stuck in your head, even if you can't quite keep up.

The ambitious Los Angeles Ballet, founded last year by the husband-and-wife team of Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary, presents an updated version of The Nutcracker, set in Los Angeles circa 1912. The luminous production stars the lovely 15-year-old Lilit Hogtanian as Clara, whose adventures alongside her beloved Nutcracker are danced with the grace and star power of a balletic diva in the making. The only downside is the canned music — no orchestra — but with the familiar score echoing off the historic Royce Hall ceiling, most fans won't notice the difference.

A profane Christmas celebration curated by the CineFamily, the Holy F*cking Sh*t Christmas Special is gleefully chock-full of holiday curios. The subversive Santa-themed lineup begins with footage of mercenary St. Nicks at department stores, followed by rejected holiday specials and cartoons. In the kitschy classic Santa Claus, K. Murray Gordon appropriates Mexican Christmas fairy-tales dubbed for American consumption — including a scene of the North Pole as Communist labor camp. Finally, the campy coming-of-age delight The Magic Christmas Tree (1965) captures a materialistic child renewing his faith in Christmas, with the help of several creepy characters.

Although Harold Lloyd isn't as celebrated as Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, his "Glasses Character" enjoyed wide popularity in the jazz age. Lloyd brought a homespun blend of perilous physicality and charming sentimentality to his first-rate silent films. Alongside these early classics, his tour-de-force, Safety Last, also screens tonight. Venturing to the city to secure wealth for his darling back home, the comedian finds himself scaling a 12-story building for a cool $1,000. The famous misadventure culminates in an iconic scene of Lloyd wildly dangling from an enormous clock hand.

Local Jazz duo Marty and Elayne pull out all the stops in their Christmas Eve show tonight. The enchanting pair boast amazing recall on hundreds of standards and originals — go ahead, scream a title and they'll know it. They've been packing the Dresden Restaurant since 1982, when owner Carl Ferraro wooed them away from a dive down the block. Marty handles percussion and vocals, supporting Elayne on keys or flute when not scatting away the Holiday Doldrums. As Los Angeles institutions go, this is one that keeps on ticking, as every new generation of Los Feliz locals falls for its moonlight-in-a-martini charm.

Not since Art Spiegelman's Maus has a graphic novel so successfully mined its medium to render universal a fiercely specific political struggle; naturally, fans of Marjane Satrapi's bildungsroman Persepolis feared its film adaptation might suffer an Eloise fate. Happily, as Satrapi herself both co-wrote and directed this animated feature, all of its endearing wit and bristle remains intact. Following the Iranian author from her childhood under the Shah's regime (during which she matter-of-factly chats up both Marx and God) and as a refugee in Germany after the revolution, Persepolis is this year's most gorgeous film — all black-and-white curves and shadows — as well as one of its most ideologically and emotionally sophisticated.

Pop-culture empire Giant Robot began way back in 1994 as a zine, and has since grown to include a glossy magazine, galleries in both San Francisco and New York, and a restaurant in Los Angeles. In celebration of its mag's 50th issue, Giant Robot has organized this exhibition in conjunction with the Japanese American National Museum. Giant Robot Bienniale: 50 Issues displays work by artists that the publication has worked with throughout its history, including the now-celebrated Pryor Praczukowski, Adrian Tomine, Gary Baseman, Sashie Masakatsu, and Eishi Takaoka.
