Just one week into a new you-know-what and LA is ready to dive back in like nothing's changed. Major events have landed all over town, such as the Concrete Frequency music and symposia series at Disney Hall, American Cinematheque's program of Golden Globe nominees, and a major retrospective on the late painter RB Kitaj at the Skirball. It's time to get your feet wet again, so spread it.

What was the best cinematic bloodbath of 2007?

  SPECIAL FEATURE
Chinese Art

This year has been a turning point for Chinese contemporary art — no longer an emerging phenomenon, Chinese art now sets the world's agenda. There's no looking back as the country steamrolls ahead to the 2008 Olympics and an ever-brighter global spotlight.

Looking through Gallery 1988's roster of artists, it's easy to spot the legacy of the giants of alt-culture illustration and progressive comics, and perhaps none more so than that of the very godfather of eccentric ink, Mr. Stan Lee. Tonight the man himself will be in attendance to celebrate the blossoming of his seed among a new generation of artists, including Luke Chueh, Mear-One, and Tim Biskup. Dozens exhibit new work honoring Lee's genius in this massive group exhibition. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Note: There is an opening reception for this exhibition Tue Jan 8 (7-11pm).

Living in the city definitely has its perks. The energy, the architecture, the food, and, of course, the music. Digging deeper into the urban experience, the Concrete Frequency festival examines the constantly evolving relationship between a city and its music. Driven by director David Robertson, the multi-part event celebrates urban life through films, orchestral programs, and dance. In tonight's Songs of the City program, some of indie pop's finest — including Sondre Lerche, Bob Mould, Zach Rogue of Rogue Wave, and Daniel Rosen of Grizzly Bear — come together to sing songs inspired by their hometowns. - Menaka Gopinath

The Aero's four-night bill of Golden Globe foreign-language nominees begins with The Kite Runner, which negotiates decades, continents, and languages in a tale of deliverance. Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, meanwhile, tells the strange, beautiful story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, paralyzed save for one eye. Next, Ang Lee's erotic Lust, Caution documents an assassination plot in Japanese-occupied Shanghai. The film version of Marjane Satrapi's brilliant black-and-white graphic novel Persepolis is a coming-of-age account of Iran's Islamic revolution, while Cristian Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days is a lurid abortion tale set during the final days of the Romanian communist regime. - Jason Jude Chan

Note: Julian Schnabel and Marjane Satrapi introduce their respective films.

Rising LA artist Yun Bai and her alter ego Yunny Bunny converge in this smashing show. Bai splits herself in two: while the artist is known for her confrontational approach to femininity and gender identity, her "other half" (the aforementioned Bunny) embodies her persistent sexual innocence. Bai's best known for her Porn Flower paintings — elaborate, delicate flowers constructed from photographs of naughty lady-parts — and her new works excite and provoke, showing why the LA Weekly singled her out as one of its top-ten emerging artists. This exhibition was originally interrupted by Art Murmur's move, and now continues, inaugurating the gallery's fancy new location. - Mallory Farrugia

Note: There is an opening reception for this exhibition at the gallery's new space on Thur Feb 14 (7-10pm).

Spawned by the legendary Chapin family, these three sisters perform their sweet melodies tonight at the Pershing Square skating rink. Their cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic" recently blew up on LA radio and turned indie heads; with musing songs of their own and a harmonic blend that would make angels proud, the sisters provide the perfect soundtrack for a night on ice. This is the last installment of Spaceland on Ice, and the final week of the ice-skating experience at Pershing Square. - Jorge Barriere

Forgive Bruce Weber for his sculpted Abercrombie and Fitch ads or his too-chic-for-comfort Calvin Klein photography if only to fully appreciate his exceptional, incisive documentary on the "James Dean of Jazz," Chet Baker. Let's Get Lost eschews razzmatazz to expose the fabulously attractive and talented trumpeter's dissolute side of drug addiction and destructive womanizing, especially during his final, forgettable years. Weber gives ample attention to Baker's American and European timelines, from his association with Charlie Parker to his bit parts in Italian B-movies. The interviews with contemporary musicians, friends, venting wives, and Baker himself offer unapologetic insight into a remarkable presence. - Jason Jude Chan

A theatrical tongue-in-cheek homage to classic surfer-dude cinema, Point Break Live! hilariously rips apart Hollywood blockbusters and A-list bad acting. Hosted at kitschy downtown cocktail lounge Charlie O's, PBL! deconstructs the 1992 Kathryn Bigelow film about FBI agent/former college quarterback Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) and his infiltration of a surf gang headed up by the charismatic and slightly creepy Bodhi (Patrick Swayze). A series of memorable high-action scenes are even improvised onstage, including car chases, big-wave surfing, armed robbery, and two dramatic skydiving sequences. Audience interaction disclaimer: PBL! selects members of the audience to re-enact Reeves' painfully stiff performance. - Julian Hooper

Born in Poland and educated in Germany, Angelika J. Trojnarski depicts desolate cultural landscapes, dismembered bodies, and the barbwired evidence of human destruction. She channels a keen awareness of war's living presence, but without an overwhelmingly political bent. Her stark subject matter challenges viewers without making them complicit, as the artist deftly avoids a soapbox among so much wrongdoing. This is BLK/MRKT Gallery's first show under its new name, Kinsey/DesForges. - Mallory Farrugia

Berlin is in perpetual transition. The enduring fountainhead of Western culture is endlessly fascinating to students of art, architecture, and politics, teeming with creative magic and a turbulent history — not to mention a burgeoning expat population. Wunderlust Berlin is a collection of art by non-native Berliners from around the globe, representing a series of engaging and often contradictory perspectives on the city's zeitgeist. From staged cinematic spectacles to sexualized mystery and ironic abstraction, this exhibition is anything but monolithic, offering a snapshot of a city in the cultural spotlight. - Mikelle Schwartz

Thai-born, American-educated Apichatpong Weerasethakul knows dichotomy. His enigmatic and ethereal films have centered on complex dualities in his much-admired cinematic career so far. His latest, Syndromes and a Century, is no different, featuring an elliptical and hypnotic story fashioned into two luminously echoing fragments. The film focuses on two doctors' 40-year romance, with the same actors fleshing out parallel exchanges and experiences in disparate time-frames and settings — the first, a rural clinic in the '60s; the second, a modern-day Bangkok hospital. To the end, Weerasethakul's tale of maladies and memory resonates for its serene splendor, honest humanism, and long-lingering loveliness. - Jason Jude Chan

Before Milos Forman made American classics, the Czech auteur made Taking Off, a sweet film about the gap between out-of-touch parents and their disillusioned offspring. Featuring fascinating, spot-on vocal auditions and an unforgettable parents-smoking-pot scene, Forman's sardonic but sympathetic film follows the couple's search for their daughter in New York. The kitschy Work Is a Four-Letter Word, meanwhile, is a funny, futuristic tale about a mycology-mad slacker, who believes his ingestible mushrooms will save society from total dehumanization. A rare conversation between filmmaker Mike Mills, journalist/historian Paul Cullum, and Arthur editor Jay Babcock follows the films. - Jason Jude Chan

The brainchild of Bay Area musician Dawn McCarthy (aka Dawn the Fawn), Faun Fables formed a decade ago when the singer left the cabaret streets of New York City for fresh musical fields. Fans of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Nils Frykdahl (McCarthy's longtime beau) will warm to Faun Fables' sweeping, surreal compositions, rooted in folk, theatre, and Celtic charms — imagine Kate Bush fronting Led Zeppelin. Fairytale imagery runs amok, but the band's catchy, wispy melodies are the things that stick in your head. Tonight, the Fables perform tracks from their fourth and latest opus, The Transit Rider, a concept album based on an original theatrical production. - Julian Hooper

Painter RB Kitaj spent much of his career in Europe, becoming part of the late-'60s London School (with David Hockney and Lucian Freud) before returning to the US to live his last years in LA. Passion and Memory is a much-anticipated survey featuring works from his private collection. Of special interest are Kitaj's controversial late figurative works, alternatively admired and reviled by critics for their striking colors and exaggerated, distorted figurative techniques, which were meant to suggest the dangerous, occasionally blurred divide between the living and the dead. - Shana Nys Dambrot
