Los Angeles
Mar 4-10, 2008
|
|
|
| |
Denizens of Los Angeles have a high tolerance for the unbelievable, but this week's wildness will amaze even the most imaginative California dreamers. The Bauhaus meets the Factory in a new David J-penned Edie Sedgwick musical, poetry-slam champ Steve Connell stars in a play about sex-crazed robots, and the dudes of Point Break LIVE! astound intrepid barroom audiences with their totally tubular homage. But as a rare collection of Charles Bukowski short films and the unsettling documentaries of Werner Herzog remind us, sometimes real life is the strangest thing of all.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Michael Chabon
|
|
|
Michael Chabon has penned more acclaimed novels than we can reasonably list, but the upcoming Maps and Legends is his first collection of nonfiction. The author talks to Boldtype about his personal pantheon, collecting vintage sci-fi, the ecstasy of influence, and the thrill of fooling a reader.

Owing as much to the Ronettes and the Everly Brothers as to electronica and shoegaze, Danish duo the Raveonettes play '50s-style rock with a splash of reverb and noise. Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo create an unlikely combo of old-meets-new, East-meets-West wizardry that pulses with dreamy beats and dark atmospheres. Their latest album, Lust Lust Lust, is a more stripped-down affair, but no less ambitious than previous efforts — there are even traces of hip-hop in the swirling, heady mix. Screechy openers Be Your Own Pet offer their own brand of punk pastiche, replete with angular guitars and puerile enthusiasm.

LA singer/songwriter and piano-bar philosopher Jim Bianco has a way of making stalkers seem like doe-eyed poets and drunken fools appear the very souls of romance. In tonight's record-release party, he breaks out tunes from his latest CD, Sing — a homage to independence, in which the legacies of alt-folk troubadours, art-house rockers, and political wits get an urban face lift. Pitch-perfect for the Hotel Café’s intimate environs, his low, lighthearted vocals are sometimes off-handed, sometimes gritty — evoking a sound that’s part Wainwright, part Zappa, part Jimmy Durante.

American jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler may be unfamiliar to many outside the 20th-century free-jazz loop, but his influence is still deeply felt. Before he turned up dead in New York's East River in 1970 at age 34, Ayler had stepped on mainstream toes everywhere from Cleveland to Stockholm, leaving an indelible impression upon progressive jazz. Director Kasper Collin's new documentary uses audio recordings, extensive interviews, and the only known footage of Ayler to trace the remarkable arc of his character and his music. Collin conducts a post-screening Q&A.

The film begins a full theatrical run Fri Mar 7 at Downtown's Laemmle Grande-4.

Downtown Riverside's charming, historic main drag is the latest LA ex-burb to go public with its contemporary-art ambitions — it's home to the Riverside Art Museum, the UCR Sweeney Gallery, and the California Museum of Photography. This month's art walk includes the lively, insightful sweep of influential Cuban painter Pedro Alvarez; photographs of the Cuban Revolution from Roberto Fumagalli; and a hilarious exhibition of new photography by Naida Osline, Bob Debris, and Robbie Miller. Installation Incognegro features new work by Mark Steven Greenfield; its ironic, melodramatic commentary on American blackness inspired tonight's screening of Spike Lee's arch 2000 satire Bamboozled.

Robbie Miller will give a talk at the CMP at 6pm.

Before her untimely death at the tragic age of 28, socialite, heiress, and fledgling film star Edie Sedgwick was Andy Warhol's pill-popping protégé (not to mention the Paris Hilton of her day). Bauhaus guitarist-turned-playwright David J's world-premiere musical Silver for Gold follows the troubled star's climb and descent into the debauched fast lane that was '70s Manhattan. The piece stars Monique Jenkinson (aka Fauxnique) rocking to David J's original music. Catch its first LA run before it heads to an Off Broadway venue later this year.

The type of work that's usually celebrated at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, located inside Wacko (the Costco of kitsch), is usually irreverent, curious, and at the forefront of post-illustration urban art. Once a year, the gallery puts on an enormous juried exhibition, and this year's theme-free show brings together over 150 pieces by more than 100 artists — including tattooists, scenic painters, commercial illustrators, animators, and more. It's pretty much the only place in LA where you can check out some of the freshest boundary-pushing art and pick up a Jenna Jameson keychain or chili-pepper holiday lights on your way out.

Though Los Angeles is her stomping ground, provocative painter/sculptress Alison Saar is internationally acclaimed. Daughter of the groundbreaking Betye Saar, whose intensely symbolic mixed-media assemblages boldly commented on issues of gender and race, and sister of equally talented painter Lezley, Alison continues the focus on gender and her rich African and Caribbean ethnic make-up. Her latest work tackles the fraught topics of fertility and aging, through sumptuous life-sized sculptures and intimate works on paper exploring wry, surreal permutations of the female body.

Funk and soul get a crisp facelift at Crash Mansion with the return of '70s recluse Darondo. The Bay Area crooner recorded a handful of successful singles back in the day — even opening for James Brown — before abruptly disappearing into obscurity for more than 30 years; those records became lost classics, eventually finding their way onto the playlist of influential BBC DJ Gilles Peterson. All the revived noise forced Darondo back into the studio, and now, onto the stage. He's joined tonight by singer/songwriter Nino Moschella, a Bay Area young'un with enough deep drum 'n bass rhythms to hold his own.

Dave Hickey has one of the most original minds in the contemporary art world. His best-selling collection of critical essays, Air Guitar, built bridges between rock music and fine art, and made Hickey a household name among West Coast impresarios. He also taught at the University of Nevada Las Vegas for years, and this dynamic survey exhibition presents the work of 26 of Hickey's former students who have since gone on to pursue international careers, including the Reverend Ethan Acres and Gajin Fujita.

Big Business (aka Coady Willis and partner-in-crime Jared Warren) bring headbanging rage to the Spaceland stage with a bass-and-drums assault that hits like a runaway bullet train. Willis conducted an epic battle with drum demigod Danny Carey of Tool at the Nokia Theater just weeks ago, and the results are still pending; perhaps tonight's show can help tip the balance. The Business men share the stage with garage punkers Red Fang and Seattle up-tempo rockers the Cops.

The three young fellows from Long Beach that make up We Barbarians have been riding a well-deserved wave of acclaim throughout the Southland. The band's distorted, jangling guitars and David Quon's high-octane lead vocals recall the Walkmen — and it didn't hurt that they were once roomies with two members of Cold War Kids (the bands rekindled their friendship on a recent tour together). The Barbarians perform tonight alongside fellow locals Crystal Antlers, whose overdriven, psychedelic black metal melts many a face around these parts.

If you only have time this month to see one dark-comedy dance spectacular about a dystopian future in which sex-craved, man-eating robots rule the world, then make it Robots vs Fake Robots. Writer David Largman Murray's script explodes with poetic flourishes, searing comedic wit, and intellectual contortions, and director Emily Weisberg's sparse-but-dynamic production bursts with sensuality, physicality, and style. Spoken-word figure Steve Connell is a highlight, as well, playing the soul-searching, Faustian protagonist and erstwhile robot sexpot.

Point Break LIVE! at Charlie O's is like a traveling Shakespearean theatre troupe — only the royal court is a downtown bar and it's, like, set at the beach. The show reenacts the 1991 Keanu Reeves/Patrick Swayze movie amid bar stools, with histrionic, half-naked actors "skydiving" in jerry-rigged suspension systems, and "surfing" as the audience is sprayed with water pistols. And, in a nod to reality television, the role of FBI agent/undercover surfer Johnny Utah is played by a different audience member every night. Keanu hopefuls must prove their aptitude by auditioning with gems like "No, I say when the ride is over," and "Vaya con Dios, brah." Fingers crossed for a Roadhouse LIVE!
