Springtime is really springing this time, and Angelenos are eager to celebrate the return of blue skies and fluffy white clouds. A new season of outdoor, Flavorpill-curated boogie nights at the Getty begins with Something in Spanish and DJ Ari K, and Custom Sundaze, the west side's freshest poolside weekly, carries on with a special visit from Mr. Scruff. Prefer to spend the vernal equinox indoors? Kraak & Smaak take on the Echoplex and Matthew Dear lights up the Avalon to keep the bunnies hopping long after the sun sets.

The Torture Debate
|
|
|
State democracy itself is at fault for perpetuating modern "clean" torture, says political-science professor Darius Rejali in his new book Torture and Democracy. Our sister publication Activate spoke with Rejali about the history of torture and how its past suggests new perspectives on the current debate.

Charity: Water has partnered with hotels, retailers, and even Flavorpill to help provide clean-water wells in impoverished communities worldwide. The nonprofit's founder, former NYC party promoter Scott Harrison, participates in many of the construction projects himself, flying to remote parts of Africa and Bangladesh nearly once a month to document the world-changing events. Tonight, join Harrison at Theory (whose Charity: Water Icon Project features a nonprofit clothing line) for a refreshing perspective on community service — from the heart-wrenching live videos to the inspiring discussion afterwards.

If Kinky and Money Mark's musically ecumenical tour were a style, it would be a Hugo Boss suit with flip-flops. Hailing from Monterrey, Mexico, Kinky are a dynamic five-man hybrid of funk, rock, Afro-Cuban, reggae, hip-hop, and electronic music. Grinding up guitars, turntables, bass, keyboards, and the occasional accordion, the raucous Kinky sound is fresh and international. Beastie Boy keyboardist Money Mark provides a calm before the storm; currently out on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records, Mark's latest solo release, Brand New by Tomorrow, is a funky, '70s chill-out shape-shifter. His quiet, gravelly voice croons bittersweet lyrics over guitars, violins, and self-described "musical calisthenics" on his trademark Moog.

Evangelicals' nutty psych-pop is tailor-made for folks who think the Flaming Lips don't have enough in common with Queen. Wrapping massive orchestrals in dark, ominous static, the band operates in a Bride of Chucky nightmare world, where evil cinematic arcs flush giddily over kitschy, synth-laden power pop. Its recent, much-buzzed release The Evening Descends isn't so much an album as a cartoon adventure. Narrated by singer Josh Jones' keening, Band of Horses-y vocals, the songs weave in and out of danger, but always heroically avoid out-and-out catastrophe.

Iconic LA bad-boy artist Mike Kelley and TASCHEN editor Dian Hanson fête their recently published book Sex to Sexty: The Most Vulgar Magazine Ever Made, which catalogs all the covers and some of the original artwork from the titular controversial periodical. The magazine, published by John Newbern from 1965 to 1983, featured humorously raunchy illustrations by Pierre Davis and others; Kelley and Hanson celebrate its pre-politically correct, post-sexual-revolution aesthetics tonight, appearing in person at the Beverly Hills TASCHEN store for a discussion and book signing.

Few classically trained opera singers can master the art of pouring a can of Cheez Whiz into their mouths mid-medley, but Varla Jean Merman (the supposed love child of Ernest Borgnine and Ethel Merman) possesses just that rare talent. The idiosyncratic alter ego of writer/performer Jeffery Roberson, Varla Jean embraces old-school drag with modern pop-culture references and one mind-blowing instrument — a stunning, multi-octave voice. Her latest show, Varla Jean Merman Loves a Foreign Tongue, combines vaudeville, Velveeta, and classic Varla.

Tonight, Flavorpill and the Getty present Brooklyn-based, avant-garde pop minimalists Something in Spanish, who share their curious fusion of jazz and electro. They're supported by Colombian native DJ Ari K, who — when he's not making mold-breaking video art with his M ss ng P eces collective — throws down Brazilian grooves and dance-minded indie cuts. Those who trek up the hill this evening also get a peek at some soon-to-close exhibitions, including The Goat's Dance: Photographs by Graciela Iturbide and California Video, a survey of video art from 1968 to the present.

Over the past five years, Jennifer Backhaus has nabbed her share of Lester Horton Awards for her company's finely polished productions. Along the way, Backhausdance has amassed an impressive repertoire of lyrical choreography that explores the human link between movement and music. In celebration of its fifth year, the company presents three premieres and a few reworkings of older pieces, including the award-winning Sitting on January. With a troupe of such faithfully committed dancers, the next five years of Backhausdance look promising indeed.

In the group show Anything Could Happen..., five international artists get together to celebrate the vibrancy of contemporary street art. From sobering reflections on inequality in South Africa to a kitschy portal into the woods of the American Midwest, the contributors explore postmodern angst, the joy of spontaneity, and the possibility of self-discovery. The media used — paint, graphite, spray paint, skate decks — are as varied as the subjects portrayed, with the often unorthodox materials adding dimension and spirit to the gallery walls.

Matthew Dear takes to the turntables in Hollywood under his dance-floor pseudonym Audion. As a live performer, he combines a talent for flooring crowds (at sold-out shows on both sides of the Atlantic) with a knack for teasing out the subtler elements behind his more mellow electronic records. Dear's most recent album, Asa Breed, demonstrates his flair for melding toned, beat-driven tracks with classic pop delivery; tonight, though, he arrives in full Audion mode, which means he'll play straight and dirty with hard-driving, acidic techno.

San Francisco-based Canyon Cinema is devoted to collecting experimental and avant-garde films from the 1930s to the present day. As if that's not cool enough, the group also promises to give more than 40% of its returns to the filmmakers involved. Tonight, Film Forum shows a selection of rarely screened experimental films, including Hand Eye Coordination (2002), Womancock (1965), and Hold Me While I'm Naked (1966); in true democratic fashion, members of Film Forum's email list selected the films from the vast Canyon Cinema catalogue. They're shown this evening at the lovely Echo Park Film Center, instead of the usual screening spot at the Egyptian.

The Deadly Syndrome are one of those ridiculously frenetic live bands who put as much care into their performances as their studio recordings. After just a handful of live shows in the fall of 2007, the Silverlake quartet began attracting praise from LA Weekly and the LA Times; the group has since recorded a thoughtful first album, The Ortolan, influenced by of-the-moment bands like Wolf Parade and Cold War Kids. The sound isn't wildly unique, but it's delivered with heartfelt flourish, particularly on stage — where homemade props, accordion dancing, and drum circles are all part of the show.

Before Juno was born, Citizen Ruth star Laura Dern delivered a messier issue: what happens when a full-grown, poverty-stricken, socially irresponsible American woman gets knocked up? A serious debate masquerading as screwball comedy, Citizen Ruth is remarkable for its standout, fall-down funny performances (witness Dern decked out with a spray-paint ring around her nose) and its treatment of the pro-life/pro-choice circus. Co-written by Sideways scribe Alexander Payne with Jim Taylor, the film stands up as well as it did when it was released 12 years ago.

Fresh from the release of their new LP, Lake Bottom, the ethereal Chapin Sisters continue their Monday-night residency at the Echo. The Brooklyn-raised trio has a background as particular as its sound: Abigail and Lily are the daughters of singer Tom Chapin, and Jessica is the daughter of director Wes Craven. The group seems beamed in from the early '60s and run through a modern indie filter: all lo-fi acoustic guitars, tambourines, and harmonies with self-consciously simple lyrics that are at once melancholy and smart. Rounding out the night's mellow retro vibe are locals Early Dolphin and experimental-indie solo act Glasser.

Looking at tony museum collections of ancient Greek and Roman statuary, one might think that the whole of antiquity existed only in tones of white and beige — but there's actually a venerable tradition of color in sculpture. This exhibition encompasses a lively survey of figurative sculptures, from ancient Greece to 16th-century Italy and 20th-century New York. Each of the several dozen pieces is a treasure in its own right; collectively, they demonstrate the unexpectedly rich and sophisticated use of color through the centuries. Highlights include an electrifying Duane Hanson installation and a lusciously formed anatomical model of a pregnant Venus from Italy's 18th century.
