With so much uncertainty, crazy weather, and political spin doctoring, we just didn't have the heart to punk our readers today. And besides, the so-called "April fools" might have been onto something, pegging the start of the new year at the vernal equinox instead of in the dead of winter. But while you can trust Flavorpill to give it to you straight, we can't speak for everyone — so just make sure the salt-shaker caps are on tight.

Kelley Polar

A classical prodigy gone disco darling, Metro Area cohort Kelley Polar lives in a Unabomber-style shack with no running water. A few days before the release of his second CD, Polar spoke with our sister publication Earplug from the lush environ of his New Hampshire home — sparking conversation on UFOs, Russian movies, and mad ravers in wife-beaters.

From the dirt-stained child pornographers of Frostitute comes this year's hottest, steaming-est pile of beat-powered dance-floor napalm: FrostituTron. Slinging passive-aggressive tracks the way cafeteria lunch ladies plop mashed potatoes on your tray, FrostituTron DJs Ango Reinhart and Pants de Leon spin everything from microhouse to micro-minimal house, and every genre in the yawning chasm betwixt the two. Your ears are about to get a sensual, hairy, oiled-up massage — happy ending included — so bring a box of tissues, a pack of band-aids, and your dance-nastics unitard. Support comes from a family of baby ferrets that party promoter SickMouf found on his doorstep and taught to spin dubstep, raga, and the best of symphonic Led Zeppelin. - Todd Goldstein

Note: Tonight's dancetravaganza is held at the Eczema Room, a real, working dermatologist's office in Venice.

Initially, Gnarls Barkley producer Danger Mouse enlisted Akron blues-rock duo the Black Keys to write the music and lyrics for an album to be sung by Ike Turner. But after Turner's death last year at 76, the project became a Black Keys album, the Danger Mouse-produced Attack & Release. If the debut single, "Strange Times," is any indication, the Keys are still stuffing archetypal rock songs with Dan Auerbach's enormous, filthy guitar riffs and Patrick Carney's stripped-down drumming — albeit augmented by Danger's demented bells and whistles. Starting off the night is Memphis' lo-fi punk rocker Jay Reatard, who recently released the excellent Night of Broken Glass EP. - Joe Blankholm

The sensual, rolling baritone of Parisian singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg sits alongside esteemed company — the nasally twirl of Bob Dylan, the confident rumble of Leonard Cohen, the caress-inducing croon of Barry White — voices so unique and transcendent they became icons of their respective musical genres. Though Gainsbourg passed on in 1991, a love for his brand of swinging French pop continues. Tonight, a gang of supremely talented local musicians — and Francophiles, no doubt — tackles the handsome lothario's swoon-worthy songs in a tribute performance. Nicole Simone, Joel Virgil, Adele Jacques, Alex and Sam, and Bjorn Turoque take the stage and give homage to Monsieur Gainsbourg as part of the Fold in Bordello series. - Jessica Jardine

This year's AFI Music Doc series kicks off with a sneak peek at Scott Hicks' inventive, intimate film Glass: A Portrait of Philip in 12 Parts. The Shine (1996) director's documentary traces the legendary composer's activities over the course of an especially busy year. The rest of the series includes a doc about a lively senior-citizens' choir, a screening of the cult-fave Beatles film Help!, and a preview of the forthcoming untitled Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary, which chronicles the band's work with music-video directors as they conceive, nurture, and birth a vision. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Each year, the stellar Fine Arts Department at UCLA stages multi-part exhibitions of its final-year MFA students, and this year's second act opens tonight with an eclectic selection of work from five promising voices. Jesse Aron Greene's antiquarian ink drawings sharply contrast with Joy Holland's heavy installations of concrete and wood. Farrah Karapetian contributes site-specific architectural interventions in plywood, alongside Juliana Romano's haunting, choppy oil-on-linen paintings and Mateo Tannatt's performance-based video. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Note: There is an opening reception on Thur Apr 3 (5-8pm). Part three opens Thur Apr 17, and the fourth and final part begins Fri May 2.

LA-based performance group My Barbarian offer up a whole heck of a lot more than your average local band. Not only is their poppy, '70s-inspired, electro-hybrid music contagiously danceable, but they also put on art, video, and theatre shows. Their cabaret-style act combines elements of musical theatre with elaborate choreography, kaleidoscopic costumes, and a lot of brazen over-the-topness. Tonight, they trek up the coast to the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, a good fit considering that the group regularly puts together installations and performances across the globe at gallery spaces, including LACMA and the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. Don't expect to merely sip a beer and passively take in My Barbarian, though, as their shows often have audiences cheering, laughing, and wholly absorbing the experience. - Jessica Jardine

As the sun sets this evening, the Getty Center transforms its courtyard into a party promenade, attracting a lively crowd of LA's work-weary, early-starting weekend warriors, and everyone in between. This month's edition of Flavorpill's Fridays Off the 405 features a killer double-header. New York breakbeat trio Power Douglas sling lo-fi, uptempo, spazzy grooves, and Philly's King Britt headlines with all sounds soulful and electric. As comfortable with funk and hip-hop as he is with deep house, his highness brings a whimsical, dubby charm to the turntables. - Jorge Barriere

Experimental legends Autechre hit LA tonight in support of their ninth studio album, Quaristice, out on Warp Records. Known for their exploration of technological frontiers and an exquisite attention to detail, Sean Booth and Rob Brown take a new approach on their latest release. They attempt to channel the dance floor-crushing energy of their celebrated shows by pulling together material from live jam sessions, rather than building up tracks bit by bit. When they take the stage tonight, you'll see why they chose this approach. Rob Hall and Massonix (Graham Massey from 808 State) round out the bill. - Steve Nalepa

No doubt David Trulli's former career as a cinematographer had an impact on his current work, as his scratchboard pieces exhibit a decidedly film-noir aesthetic. The scratchboard is a thin board of white clay coated with black ink; Trulli scratches away the black, illuminating his moody narratives with the dim glow beneath. While Trulli's exhibition occupies Robert Berman's D5 space, the C2 Gallery simultaneously shows Moods for Moderns, a group show curated by Paper Moon Graphics creator Brad Benedict, featuring work by Anthony Ausgang, Lou Brooks, and Judy Ragagli. - Ashley Tibbits

Blek le Rat is known as the Parisian forefather of stencil and graffiti art. Nearly three decades ago, he plastered the City of Lights' meticulously manicured streets with his trademark image of the jumping black rat, and paved the way for artists like Banksy in the UK and Shepard Fairey stateside. In recent years, he's been in high demand as a gallery artist, and his much buzzed-about first solo show in the US, Art Is Not Peace But War, opens tonight at Subliminal Projects in Echo Park — one of the havens for street art in LA. - Jessica Jardine

Steve Martin famously said that talking about music is like dancing about architecture; tonight at the Hammer, audiences finally get to see that idea (almost) in action, as unpredictable architect Frank Gehry has it out with Bard College president and renowned classical-music scholar/conductor Leon Botstein, who commissioned Gehry to design Bard's performing-arts center in 1996. Expect an entertaining chat about the progressive relationship between architects and cultural institutions, how to deal with large-room acoustics, and what they really think of the new LACMA down the street. - Shana Nys Dambrot

Joni Mitchell once confided that the greatest musical compliment she'd ever received was that her songs evoked cinema — musical moving pictures. Fellow musician Dudley Saunders is another whose art travels through filmic territory; the storyteller's songs have have been labeled as rock, punk, and folk, though Saunders prefers to umbrella his music under one simple category: outsider. The renaissance man arrives at Echo Curio tonight in support of last year's critically acclaimed, self-produced album, The Emergency Lane, performing MySpace favorites and tracks from the album Elliott Smith never made, The Billy White Acre Sessions. - Julian Hooper

German artist, actor, author, and filmmaker Heinz Emigholz offers a love letter to Los Angeles with his film Schindler's Houses. The documentary charts the work and influence of architect Rudolph Schindler, but Emigholz's loose style turns it into a meditation on the relationship between our city's buildings and their surroundings. The film is a part of the director's 24-year project Photography and Beyond, which examines creativity's many incarnations, and screens tonight as part of LA Filmforum's ongoing multi-venue Emigholz survey. - Mallory Farrugia

Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights is undeniably, embarrassingly cheesy. Replete with slow-motion shots and blue-lit greasy spoons, it truly leaves no US coming-of-age travelogue cliché unturned, and its protagonist, first-time actress Norah Jones (yes, the singer), doesn't settle comfortably into her role as a lovelorn waitress. What saves this film is its emotional intensity and its supporting performances: Jude Law as a Bronx diner manager channels his best ruefulness with none of his standard preening; Rachel Weisz startles as the tarty wife of an alcoholic cop (the always-amazing David Strathairn); and even Natalie Portman rises above her normal brattiness as a professional card shark whose dad treats her like a mark. - Lisa Rosman

That Sarajo Frieden's Los Angeles studio is at the nexus of Koreatown, Little Armenia, and Thai Town makes perfect sense after you see her mixed-media work; her vibrantly colored, charming pieces are as worldly as they are whimsical. Combining folk and outsider elements, Frieden's art offers playfully obsessive, intricate pattern and dreamy fairy-tale narrative that's both surreal and serene, depicting a world that defies the laws of physics to get at something more heartfelt and jovial. She shows her latest compositions, many of which were embellished by embroiderer Marci Boudreau, at Atwater's Little Bird Gallery. - Ashley Tibbits
