Here's a snapshot of our favorite things to do in Los Angeles this week. |

Los Angeles

There are plenty of tempting reasons to put off filing your taxes this week. Punk icons X are out on a reunion tour, the Getty sponsors a symposium on our city's historical bridges, and a four-day festival of graffiti and music calls for an end to the Iraq war. But since it's better to have a disco ball hanging over your head than late penalties, fill out those IRS forms before you fill up your dance card.

WNYC's Radiolab is breaking new ground with its innovative audio storytelling; each episode tackles sprawling topics such as music or morality from various scientific and anecdotal angles. Co-host Jad Abumrad spoke with our sister publication Boldtype about how telling a story is like composing music, what makes for a good science read, and why Orson Welles was an evil genius.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band have been churning out bluesy, swingin' albums since 1984, but their 2006 release, What's Going On, stands at the pinnacle of the group's career. On that recording, the horn blowers brought in rappers Chuck D, G. Love, and Guru to vocalize the frustration and angst felt over Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath wrought on the band's hometown of New Orleans. In their 20-plus years together, the Dirty Dozen have released as many albums as their name suggests, and have recorded session work for everyone from Aaron Neville and Elvis Costello to Modest Mouse. They pop into town tonight before heading back into the studio.

Though singer/songwriter Charlie Hilton may have a ritzy last name, her music is more rootsy than razzle-dazzle. The Meemies' lo-fi, folk-rock sound showcases Hilton's easy, unpolished voice. Sweet ditties like "You're So Pretty" and "The Shark Song" sound like they could come from the canon of Kimya Dawson. Banjo strumming and lullaby rhythms strip down the overall vibe until you find yourself gently swaying to-and-fro as you listen. Having wrapped up a stop at Spaceland, the Meemies continue the neighborhood crawl tonight and roll a few blocks around the corner to the Silverlake Lounge.

Iconic multimedia artist, curator, and scholar Bruce Yonemoto has accomplished the impossible: the early star of the underground video-art scene effectively transitioned into a respected, influential artist and professor in his later years, without losing an iota of his fearless vision. Tonight, Yonemoto leads a scintillating survery of historic underground video art by his contemporaries from the early '80s. It's intended for mature audiences only — in other words, it's got a few of the juicy parts that they never teach in art school.

Aurélia Thierrée stars in a circus-theatre spectacle of retro, sideshow-style wonderment. Thierrée's parents invented Le Cirque Bonjour, which is credited as the catalyst for the "new cirque" movement and forerunner of troupes like Cirque du Soleil; in fact, her mother, Victoria Thierrée Chaplin (daughter of Charlie Chaplin), is responsible for this gravity-defying production. Performed to gypsy jazz and chamber music, Aurélia's Oratorio features a kite flying a girl, a transforming hourglass, and snow falling on giant puppets — in other words, magic.

The Los Angeles River feels eons away to those Angelinos not living on the East Side, but it's an integral, flowing part of the city's history. The Los Angeles Conservancy and Friends of the Los Angeles River cosponsor a panel of expert architects, engineers, and historians, who share the story of how the river's bridges were built during the early 20th century. These majestic structures floating over the river have earned cameos in movies like Terminator 2 and Transformers. Celebrate the fact that the LA City Council just approved several Los Angeles River bridges as Historic-Cultural Monuments (HCMs) by checking out the panel discussion. Then, a few days later, take the Bridge Mix tour to check out the structures in person.

Southern Californian punk rock was invented on the day that Exene Cervenka, John Doe, D.J. Bonebrake, and Billy Zoom — collectively known as X — decided to form a band. In the three decades since the Doors' Ray Manzarek produced X's debut record, Los Angeles (whose anti-anthem title track continues to resonate with Angelenos plotting their escape), they've become synonymous with the city's sunny-schizo zeitgeist. Charismatic frontwoman Exene has left LA to explore St. Louis' allegedly fierce punk scene (after divorcing the then-penniless poet Viggo Mortensen) and embarked on her own successful visual-arts career. But after an epic set at SXSW, X proved that, even after 31 years, they can still show the kids how it's done.

Nicole Cohen engineers recombinant layers of still and video imagery, investigating the network of associations that interior spaces contain. Also, she has something of a chair fetish. Her current project, Please Be Seated, was commissioned by the Getty Center to be installed in its under-appreciated decorative-arts galleries. Depending on who you ask, the piece is either a high-concept, interactive experiment in identity-based era conflation, or a strategy to lure audiences into the furniture galleries. Tonight, she lectures on her inspirations, her plans for the future, and her ongoing search for the sexiest chair in the world.

The Bay Area's avant-garde indie rockers Xiu Xiu take the stage in support of their sixth full-length, Women as Lovers, which the band has described as its most accessible release to date. Using an endlessly eclectic collection of sounds — from ear-piercing electronic noises to horns and bells to straightforward guitars and drums — Jamie Stewart and his revolving cast of bandmates have made abrasive, dissonant elements into beautiful, melodic pop songs. Stewart delivers his intimate lyrics in a gentle, wavering warble, while dealing with themes as diverse as the war in Iraq, love, and self-contempt. Opening up the night is Thao Nguyen's excellent indie-rock group, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down.

Although director David Cronenberg's recent A History of Violence and Eastern Promises have been relatively accessible affairs, his first films were thought-provoking, techy gore-fests. The Steve Allen Theater hosts an eight-week retrospective of Cronenberg's earlier efforts, including tonight's kick-off selection, Dead Ringers. Jeremy Irons plays both Elliot and Beverly Mantle, a pair of identical twin gynecologists who become lost in sexual confusion, drugs, and insanity when a beautiful young actress with strange lady-bits enters the picture. In the coming weeks, also check out Videodrome, The Fly, Naked Lunch, Crash, Existenz, and the world premiere of a new Cronenberg short.

Since forming in Swindon in 1987, Meat Beat Manifesto have toyed with breaks, techno, industrial, dub, and everything in between, carving out a distinct (if sometimes divisive) niche in electronic music. Founder Jack Dangers, meanwhile, has worked with everyone from Public Enemy and David Bowie to the Bee Gees (huh?) and David Byrne. Dangers and company touch down tonight alongside underground-improv aesthete Raz Mesinai, a composer who first gained recognition in the avant-garde circles of early-'90s New York. Striking into (slightly) less abstract territory, Mesinai's Badawi project (whose new record features collabs with DJ Spooky, Kode9, and DJ/rupture) blows speakers and minds with a singular brand of abstract, Middle East-influenced dub.

It's been almost seven years since Dance Camera West began providing audiences with films from around the world and presenting them with theatrical flair in locales across Los Angeles. For No Dancing at the Mandrake, DCW happily turns the lens around to focus on local dance filmmakers. More like an "open projector" than an open mic, attendees bring their own dance films (a BYODVD, if you will), sidle up to the bar, and peek at each other's work. Both filmmakers and film lovers are welcome.

London-based Morcheeba have been churning out sleepy, sexy tunes since "trip-hop" was a novel genre. In this decade, the Godfrey brothers and vocalist Skye Edwards delivered four albums, including 2000's landmark Fragments of Freedom. While Edwards has left to pursue a solo career, Morcheeba live on with a bevy of guest vocalists, including Judie Tzuke, Thomas Dybdahl, rapper Cool Calm Pete, and Manda, a French singer who contacted the brothers via MySpace. Morcheeba's sixth album, Dive Deep, delivers Zero 7-style chill-outs that bubble and sway with relaxed confidence. They perform tonight alongside Argentine singer/songwriter Federico Aubele, whose blend of dub, reggae, hip-hop, tango, and experimental sounds is a genre unto itself.

Tonight, the Moth revives the art of storytelling in an atmosphere of creative, cocktail-fueled competition. These monthly, audience-judged events are usually worthwhile affairs — but tonight the organizers top themselves, as an all-star cast of slam champs brings its best material for the appropriately titled "When Worlds Collide," hosted by Brian Finkelstein. The winning yarn-spinner will be featured on the Moth's newly launched podcast, and the stable of quick-witted judges choosing the lucky one includes Evan Handler (Sex and the City) and Rob Corddry (The Daily Show).

Salomón Huerta is one of LA's most popular painters — although personally, he seems somewhat reserved. His best-known works are smallish, finely detailed "portraits" of the backs of his subjects' heads and uncommunicative suburban landscapes that likewise keep their emotional distance. Comparatively, his new work takes a walk on the wild side. Ostensibly inspired by Daniel Chavira's photographic portraits of masked lucha libre wrestlers (now on diplay at Michael Kohn Gallery), Huerta's new paintings are florid, dynamic, and flashy — but with the masks firmly in place, his new subjects are no more intimate or familiar than his old ones.
